Studios- What you should ask yourself
by Philip Lane, the Beehouse

1. What
are you actually trying to achieve - a home studio for personal use, a
home studio for commercial use, an electronic music facility, a facility
where you cater primarily for acoustic instruments????
2. Are you a musician?
If so, what musical knowledge do you have?
3. Do you plan to
record your own music or vocals, or other peoples'?
4. Have already bought
any equipment? If so, what?
5. Do you have a preference
for a computer-based, work station-based or tape-based system?
6. What type of end
product do you want to produce and what will they be aimed at? e.g. CDR
masters for duplication or mini disc - for sale at gigs - for promotional
purposes for agents and /or record companies ?
7. Do you have any
experience in recording? Have you purchased any texts or attended any
courses?
8. What style or genre
of music do you want to mainly produce or are you looking to be totally
flexible - e.g. for commercial purposes.
9. What are the dimensions
of the space available for your studio set-up?
10. Will there be
any need for soundproofing?
11. Do you intend
to treat your spaces acoustically? - this is very important for professional
sounding results but will depend upon budget.
12. What budget are
you intending to spend on a) the equipment, b) the room?
